![]() ![]() Within we encounter another new Necro: a fusion of a four tentacles and head that can slide into dead bodies and reanimate them. As you move further into the base, you come across human opponents for the first time, and the ensuing gunfire initiates a subtle cover system and play style reminiscent of Uncharted. Thankfully an armour upgrade and a transition to smooth and stable split-screen action with Carter in tow, its a lot easier to take out the behemoth. You're greeted with a giant Snow Beast Necromorph, its spider claw smashing the lift and trying to kill Isaac. Your buddy marks more incoming Necros, the shout out causing Isaac to take refuge in a nearby shed, using his telekinesis on a generator to use an elevator. ![]() So you chop off limbs, sure, but chopping off limbs in Dead Space serves a purpose specific to the series.Carver's more aggressive in his attacks, and the game's dialogue adapts depending if you're soloing or teaming up. It's all about enemy management rather than wholesale enemy destruction. You cut off a monster's legs or use stasis to slow it down. Much like Alan Wake's flashlight-weak enemies or Halo's Hunters, Dead Space features combat that is about managing threats rather than pointing at enemies with a gun and clicking until they die. Unlike those types of enemies in traditional shooters, body shots aren't enough to kill them. Dead Space features enemies that charge to attack you. Limb-severing is of vital importance as well, but not simply as a cool feature. The level design complements this, restricting movement without feeling artificial and draconian. Instead of feeling like you're stumbling around in a bad dream, you're very much in control, but you're no ninja-you've got a feeling of weight and mass. "The game's feel is important too: Dead Space makes you feel like a tank without giving you the horrible tank controls traditionally associated with horror games. And while he prefers Dead Space 2, he gets what made it special: Years back, critic GB Burford wrote an excellent analysis of what makes Dead Space tick at Kotaku.
